John Murray, 1st Marquess of Atholl was born on 2 May 1631[1].[2] He was the son of John Murray, 1st Earl of Atholl and Jean Campbell.[2] John was baptised in1633.[3]
He married Lady Amelia Anne Sophia Stanley, daughter of James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby and Charlotte de la Trémoille, on 5 May 1659.[4][5]
He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Atholl in June 1642.[2]
In 1653 he joined the King's Standard with 2000 men.[2] He was invested as a Privy Counsellor Scotland in 1660.[2] He held the office of Justice-General between 1661 and 1665.[2],[6] He held the office of Hereditary Sheriff of Fife.[2] He held the office of Captain-General of the Royal Company of Archers between 1670 and 1703.[2]
He succeeded to the title of 3rd Lord Murray, Gask and Balquhidder, to the title of 3rd Earl of Tullibardine and to the title of 5th Lord Murray of Tullibardine in January 1669/70.[7]
He was Colonel of the 4th troop of Horse Guards between 1671 and 1678.[2] He held the office of Keeper of the Privy Seal between 1672 and 1689.[2] He held the office of an Extraordinary Lord of Session between 14 January 1673 and 1689.[2]
He was created 1st Lord Murray, Balvany and Gask 1st Earl of Tullibardine, 1st Viscount of Balquhidder and he was created 1st Marquess of Athole on 7 February 1676.[2][6]
In 1685 he was instrumental in opposing Argyll's invasion. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle on 29 May 1687.[8]
Lord Macaulay described him as "the falsest, the most fickle, the most pusillanimous of mankind."[8]
He died on 6 May 1703 at age 72.[8] He was buried on 17 May 1703 at [8] Dunkeld Cathedral Graveyard, Dunkeld, Perth and Kinross, Scotland[9]
