Biography

Birth

Elsie was born on December 21, 1912 in Java, SD to John Naasz and Christina (Helm) Naasz. She was the second of their 8 children. Elsie was baptized on March 9, 1913 and confirmed in the Lutheran church on April 1, 1928.[1][2]


Family

Elsie married twice:

On November 22, 1934, at the age of 22, Elsie married Richard Schauer (1912-1979) in Kidder County, ND.[3][2]

Children:
  1. Alnor (1935-2006): Married Donna Mack (Living), 5 children; Married Beatrice "Tootie" Pfaff (Living), 2 children.
  2. Phyllis (1939-2022): Married Irvin Wallner (1923-2011), 2 children.

On September 2, 1982, at the age of 69, Elsie married Henry Rau (1907-2000).[4][2]


Death

On June 24, 2007, at the age of 94, Elsie passed away in Steele, ND. She is buried in Dawson Cemetery in Kidder County, ND.[1][5]

Obituary[2]
Elsie (Schauer) Rau, 94, Steele, peacefully went to be with her Lord June 24, 2007, at Golden Manor Nursing Home, Steele. Services will be held at 1p.m. Friday, June 29, at Dawson Lutheran Church, with Rev. Paul Tjostem officiating. Burial will be in Dawson Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel, where prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation continues one hour prior to services at the church.

Elsie Naasz was born in Java, S.D., on Dec. 21, 1912, to John and Christen (Helm) Naasz. She attended school in Java until moving to Napoleon. At age 16, she worked at the Sibley Hotel, Dawson. On Nov. 22, 1935, she married Richard Schauer; from this marriage, two children were born, Alnor and Phyllis. They lived on a farm south of Dawson until 1949, when they moved into Dawson, were Richard worked for Kidder County and Elsie was a rural mail carrier for many years.

Richard passed away in 1979, and Elsie married Henry Rau on Sept. 2, 1982. They took many trips together and enjoyed traveling and being with friends and family. Henry passed away in 2001, and Elsie moved in to Golden Manor Nursing Home in September 2005.

Elsie is survived by one daughter, Phyllis (Irvin) Wallner, Tappen; one daughter-in-law, Beatrice (Pfaff) Schauer; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Ervin Naasz; and one sister, Lucinda (Allen) Propp, Worden, Mont.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands, Richard and Henry; her son, Al Schauer; her granddaughter, Paulette Schauer; two sisters; and one brother.
