John Adolphus Nelles was born on February 14, 1844, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He married Margaret H. Cuthbertson on November 16, 1865 in York, Haldiman, Haldimand-Norfolk, Ontario, Canada, and they had one child. He then married Betsy Leitch on February 19, 1874 in Elgin, Ontario, Canada and they had two children. He third married Priscilla C Pearson (1854-1945) on May 7, 1879 in Caledonia, Haldimand, Ontario, Canada and they had four children together. He died on October 2, 1918, in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 74.
