Catherine was an orphan (or a deserted child) who spent her early life in a workhouse (aka poorhouse) at Scariff in County Clare, Western Ireland. She came to Hobart as a free settler under a scheme designed to redress the gender imbalance in the colony. She was one of 150 young women who arrived in Hobart on the "Calcutta" on 4th November, 1851, was assigned as a servant to Mrs Richardson of Cottage Green at Battery Point. She was known as Kitty until she arrived in Hobart but thereafter by her proper name. She married John Patrick Quinn at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Hobart on 2 May 1853.
