Leesville, La. — A Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office Deputy and former Louisiana State Police trooper, Steven G. Netherland, was killed in a single-vehicle accident Monday morning. Officers responded to the accident at approximately 7 a.m. Monday, which occurred on La. 8 east of Calcasieu Loop. The LSP reports that Netherland was on duty when he was traveling through a construction zone on La. 8, lost control of his vehicle and crossed the centerline. After crossing the centerline, Netherland's vehicle exited the left side of the roadway, before colliding with two dirt compactors and a large roadway stabilizer. State police report Netherland was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected. He was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending, and the crash remains under investigation. Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft expressed his thoughts and prayers to Netherland's family Tuesday morning. "I've known Steve for approximately 30 years," Craft said. "He was a very strong family man, very dedicated to his profession and his ministry, and it was my privilege to have worked alongside of him and worked with him through the years. It's also been my privilege to have him come to work here at the Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office upon his retirement from the state police. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and daughter at this time, and he will be sadly missed by those of us in the Vernon Parish law enforcement community." Netherland had been a LSP trooper for 22 years and was assigned to Troop E at the time of his retirement. He was currently a deputy in the civil division, and had been employed there for approximately one year, the state police reports. "Netherland was highly respected among his fellow law enforcement colleagues, was a model trooper and deputy, always working hard towards our mission of public safety, and was always willing to help a person in need," the Louisiana State Police said in a release Monday afternoon.
