Biography

Family and Military Career

John was the eldest son of Ralph Neville, 1st earl of Westmorland, and his first wife, Margaret Stafford.[1][2] He was likely of age before 1 December 1408 when the escheator was ordered to give him livery of his wife's 'pourparty' [sic] (her inheritance share), which points to a birthdate of 1387 or earlier.[1][2][3]

He was the Keeper of Roxburgh Castle from 12 November 1408 until 1 August 1411,[2][4] and Warden of the West March from 15 May 1414 until his death.[2][5] He accompanied the king to France in 1417 and was present at the seiges of Caen[6] and Rouen.[7] On 2 October 1417 he was appointed to receive the surrender of the occupants of the castle of Coursy.[1][2] Four weeks later he was made captain of the castle and town of Verneuil.[8] In July 1419 he was made Keeper of the Warren of St John, Argences, in the baliwick of Caen.[9]

Marriage

John married Elizabeth Holand, a younger daughter of Thomas Holand, 2nd earl of Kent, and Alice FitzAlan. The licence for their marriage at Brancepeth, Durham was dated 29 August 1394.[1][10][11][12] There were at least four children from this marriage:

Elizabeth Holand was co-heiress in 1408 to her brother Edmond, earl of Kent, and through him she inherited the manors of Chattiscombe (in Teverton), Kent (with the hundred of Lifton); Shebbear, Devon, and Allerton in Nottinghamsire; and G. Hemlington and Kirkby Moorside in Yorkshire.[1][3]

Death

John Neville, Knt., died in France shortly before 20 May 1420 (in his father's lifetime).[1][20] No inquisition post mortem has been found, although at least one historian has claimed that John Neville died at Verneuil[21] and that seems likely.

His widow died 3 (or 4) January 1422/3 and was buried in the church of the Grey Friars at London.[1][22][23]
