Biography

Illegitimate daughter by unknown mistress.

According to the CWAAS Threlkeld article by Jackson, "By Sir Richard she had a son and two daughters " [1]

That the male line continued seems confirmed by another CWAAS article:[2]

Richard's grandfather, Sir John Hudleston of Millom in Cumberland was a tenant of Thomas Grey, Marquess of Dorset. Sir John's son and heir, Sir Richard Hudleston, had apparently married a bastard daughter of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick. Warwick provided for his daughter, Margaret, by giving to her and to her husband the two Cumberland manors of Blennerhasset and Upmanby, as well as land in Penrith and Carlisle. This legacy, combined with the Hudleston holdings at Millom in Cumberland and other lands in the area, made Sir Richard Hudleston's only son, Richard, the younger, a better than average catch in the northern gent ry marriage market.

However concerning that particular son, things did not go well, as explained in the article, and:

As for Richard Hudleston, the erstwhile bridegroom of the late Elizabeth Dacre, his first venture into matrimony was his last. He never remarried and died on 5 October 1503, at the age of twentyseven, leaving two unmarried sisters as his heirs

  • Nevill blog: 2011 Aug 24th. (Says Margaret was born before 1450 - presumably based on marriage date. Also suggests that it may have been her daughter Margaret who married Threlkeld, citing "other sources". Surprisingly also says there were no other illegitimate children.)

According to the Radcliffe of Dilston and and Derwentwater pedigree in Northumberland county history volume X facing page 280.Ellen Radcliffe who married Sir Lancelot Thirkeld (Threlkeld) had a marriage settlement dated 12th June 1473. Her Eldest brother and heir apparent John Radcliffe was disinherited by his father in 1481 but later appears in his fathers will. This is after the new heir Sir Richard Radcliffe "The Rat" was killed at Bosworth field in 1485 and attainted for supporting Richard the third. John Radcliffe was married to Anne Fenwick youngest sister of Mary Huddleston(Fenwick) This makes the marriage of Margaret Huddleston widow of Richard Huddleston's marriage to Lancelot Threlkeld after Ellen's death make more sense.

"The eldest son of Sir Lancelot, and the second of that name, married firstly, Elyn Radclyffe, as I find briefly stated in a pedigree attached to my papers on the Lowther House, in Penrith. Writing at Naples, without being able to refer to my authority, I cannot give my proofs, but I am sure the statement is correct. I think she would be the mother of his children. His second marriage was, like his father's, calculated to bring èclat and a good dowry to his house, for Margaret was the illegitimate daughter of Richard Neville, the great Earl of Warwick, and widow of Richard Hudleston, K.B., eldest son of Sir John Hudleston, of Millom, whom he predeceased. By Sir Richard she had a son and two daughters. ..."
