Elizabeth arrived in New England at age 15, probably in May 1633. She traveled with her father and his third wife, Ann, and four half-siblings. Her stepmother was pregnant on the voyage.[3] Elizabeth was admitted to the Boston church on 30 March 1634 as "Elizabeth Newgate daughter in law [step-daughter] to our sister Anne Newgate".[3]
Elizabeth was educated and was known for being a midwife.[3][6]
Elizabeth's father left a will dated 25 November 1664 and proved 11 September 1665. He left bequests to Edward Jackson, Elizabeth's sons by John Oliver (John and Thomas) and "all the children now living that my daughter, Elizabeth, had by the said Edward Jackson, her now husband". He also left a "gilt salt and a gilt wine cup" to Elizabeth and named her husband Edward as co-executor. Elizabeth also inherited one-fourth of the residue of her father's substantial estate.[3]
Marriages and Children
Elizabeth married first to John Oliver about 1637 (estimate based on the birth of their first child in July 1638) probably at Boston.[3][7] Elizabeth's half-sister, Sarah, married John's brother about five years later.[3] John was the eldest child of Thomas Oliver and Ann _____ and had arrived in Boston in 1632.[3][7] Elizabeth and John had the following children, all baptized at Boston:
John, born 21 July 1638,[8] died 27 March 1639 in Boston[3]
Elizabeth, born 28 February 1639/40,[8] died 31 May 1712; married Enoch Wiswall[3]
Hannah, born 3 March 1641/2;[8] died 11 November 1653[3]
John (2nd of name), born 15 April 1644,[9] died before July 1684; married Susanna Sweet[3]
Thomas, born 10 February 1645/6,[9] died 31 October 1715; married first to Grace Prentice, second to Mary Wilson[3]
John, Elizabeth and their children were legatees in the will of John's father, Thomas Oliver, dated 13 March 1652.[3]
John Oliver died 11 April 1646, leaving a will dated 25 August 1641 and proved 11 September 1647 in which Elizabeth was named executrix.[3][7][10] When the estate was divided, Elizabeth received one-third of the residue with the remainder going to her three children.[3]
Elizabeth married second in Cambridge to Edward Jackson on 14 March 1648/9.[3][4][6][11] Edward had arrived in New England about 1643 with his first wife and several children.[3][4] Edward and Elizabeth had the following children:
Sarah, born 5 January 1649/50,[4][6][11] baptized 21 April 1650 at Boston, died at Newton on 23 February 1711/2; married Nehemiah Hobart[3]
Edward, born 15 December 1652,[6][11] died at Newton 30 September 1727; married first to Grace ______; married second to Abigail Wilson[3][4]
Lydia, born about 1656,[4][6][11] died in Newton 12 January 1725/6; married Joseph Fuller[3]
Elizabeth,[12] born 28 April 1658,[4][6][11] died 25 January 1740/1; married first to John Prentice; married second to Jonas Bond[3]
Hannah, born about 1660[4] (birth not in town records), died 26 September 1690; married Nathaniel Wilson[3][6]
Ruth, born 15 January 1664,[11] died unmarried[6] on 7 January 1691/2[3][4]
On 2 June 1666, Elizabeth and Edward sold the farm at Pulling Point that had belonged to John Oliver for £333.[3]
Edward Jackson died in Cambridge (Newton) leaving a will dated 11 June 1681 and proved 26 August 1681. Elizabeth, her step-son Seabas and son Edward were named as co-executors.[3][4]
Death and Will
Elizabeth died at Newton on 30 September 1709,[13] aged 91 or 92 years.[3][6][14] "A small stone at the left of Edward [Jackson]’s stone (the face of which is scaled off), marks a grave, and the footstone, bearing the name Elizabeth Jackson."[4]
Elizabeth left a will dated 8 September 1709 and proved 14 November 1709.[3][15] Her sons Thomas Oliver and Edward Jackson were named as its executors. In her will, Elizabeth named sons John Oliver (who had already received his full portion), Thomas Oliver, Edward Jackson; daughters Elizabeth Wiswall, Sarah Hobart, Elizabeth Bond; son-in-laws Nehemiah Hobart, Joseph Fuller; grandchildren Elizabeth Prentice, Elizabeth Fuller, children of deceased daughter Hannah Wilson and the children of daughter Sarah Hobart.[3][4]
