Biography

Hobert was born on January 23, 1879 at Griffith in Scott County, Tennessee, on June 25, 1909 the name Griffith was changed to Winona. He was the son of John Lindsay Newport and Elizabeth ( Jeffers ) Newport . He married Bertie Hembree on August 4, 1918 at Huntsville in Scott County. Hobert was a retired Rail Road worker, he passed away from a coronary thrombosis and coronary heart disease on July 11, 1959 at the Jellico Hospital in Jellico, Campbell County, Tennessee.

NEWPORT, HOBERT – Born January 23, 1897, age 62 years, 4 months and 18 days. Deceased this life July 11, 1959. He was married to BERTIE HEMBREE August 4, 1918. To this union was born nine children – four boys and five girls. Two preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, BERTHA HEMBREE NEWPORT, three boys, ELZO, ODELL and ANCIL, all of Dayton, Ohio; four daughters, RUTH SEXTON of Winona; RACHEL CHAMBERS of Cincinnati, Ohio; WILMA SEXTON of Oneida; LOUISE CHAMBERS of Route l, Pioneer, Tennessee, 23 grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren, four brothers, BURL NEWPORT of Salt Lake City, Utah; LAWRENCE and BERT NEWPORT of Winona ; AUDNEY NEWPORT of Oneida; one sisters, LUCINDA DAVIS of Oneida; one half-brother, J. L. NEWPORT of Michigan; and a host of friends and relatives to mourn his absence. He professed a hope in Christ April, 1952. He joined the Winona Baptist Church in May and was baptized June 12, 1955. He lived a devoted Christian life until death. He served the U. S. Armed Forces in the 1st World War and was a retired railroad man. He often talked about the mansion the Lord had gone to prepare for him and told his friends and family he was ready to go. We feel our loss is Heaven's gain.
