Biography

Catherine was born about 1770. She was the daughter of John Nichols, Sr. and Mariah J. Payne. She passed away after 1830 and possibly shortly before 1837 when a chancery case was entered into the Bedford County, Virginia courts.

Marriage and Family

Catherine Nichols married John Pollard on 9 Jan 1787 in Bedford Co. VA. Based on this date, we assume she was born before about 1770. She was the mother of nine children. The last for whom we have a birth date is Sophia, born in 1812. Thus Catherine did not die earlier than that date, and perhaps died much later.

Nichols-15203 and Nichols-3176 do not represent the same person because: Upon further study, it appears that these two profiles should not be merged, at least not at this time. Evidently two different John Pollard named people have been spousally associated with two different people named (originally) Catherine Nichols. The two John Pollards are descended from different parents, and come from different lineages-- one from Maryland, the other from Virginia. Possibly one of them married a Catherine Nichols, however we have no basis to conclude which one of these profiles might pertain. Sourcing of the Nichols-15203 profile is extremely weak, thus in and of itself should be questioned as even a valid profile at this time. If in the future more robust data sets can be found to substantiate even the existence of Nichols-15203, or of "her" attachment to a John Pollard, then a merge could at that time be re-contemplated; however to do so at this juncture would be irresponsible.

I have approved the merge. I was told by another researcher that John Nichols received his Virginia lang grant in 1778, and that his family moved to Bedford Co. VA in 1779. If this is correct, and if Catherine was born in 1770,. then she was presumably born in Maryland.

John's will (5 April 1803) names his daughter Katherine Nichols Pollard. Most of the other records and family trees I have seen spell her name Catherine. Since WikiTree searches will bring up records with either spelling, I do not believe that Katherine should be listed as a nickname.

Nichols-15203 and Nichols-3176 appear to represent the same person because: Probably the best way to handle this duplication is to complete the merge and check the birth location as uncertain. Likewise the death date. You could also describe the uncertainties in the biography.

Nichols-15203 and Nichols-3176 are not ready to be merged because: Definitely the same person, but we should resolve some of the discrepancies before merging. The birth locations are different; since her parents are said to have married in Bedford Co. VA, that's probably her birthplace, but verification is needed. Nichols-15203 has a specific death date, but no documentation.
Nichols-15203 and Nichols-3176 appear to represent the same person because: Appears that these may be the same person, however one of these profiles may be attached to an incorrect spouse, which should be sorted out re. reference sources, either during or after the merge.

Nichols-7427 and Nichols-3176 appear to represent the same person because: Same husband. Discrepancy in dates which seem to be estimates. Thanks for reviewing

I am so excited to see this. I just joined Wiki Tree this month. I am a descendant of Sophia Pollard Gooldy - her parents being John Pollard and Catherine Nichols.
