He was son of John Nichols 1640 – 1700 and Lydia Wilkins 1644 – 1739. He married Joanna Towneon 12 Dec 1694 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts.
His family were Yeoman farmers in rural Essex County. He and three of his sons moved to Worcester county and one son moved to Connecticut. The daughters seemed to have died fairly young. Based on the children's probate records it is likely they were illiterate. None of the children have birth records. However, we do have baptism records but some of them are long after the date of birth. Descendants of three of the sons to have autosomal DNA matches.
