Biography
St Nicholas
William Nicholson was born in Rochester, Kent, England.
William Henry Nicholson was born on 29 Jan 1799 in Rochester, Kent, England. He was the son of William Nicholson and his wife, Isabella Maudsley. He was baptised at St Nicholas in Rochester on 5 March 1799. [1][2]
William Henry, gentleman, became a Freeman of Rochester by birth on 7 February 1820. [3]
On 22 May 1833 at St Margaret Rochester he married Elizabeth Smith[4][5] and made a home at Castle Lodge in Upnor, Kent.[6]
In 1831 William was commissioned as a Cornet in the West Kent Yeomanry Cavalry.[8]
In 1844 William was appointed magistrate for Aylesford, Kent.[9]
In 1863 William is described as "a banker of Rochester" in a court case where some share certificates had been stolen from him.[10]
St Margaret
William died 15 June 1880, his death being registered at Medway. [11][12] He was buried at St Margaret, Rochester on 19 June 1880. [13] His will is recorded on 31 July 1880 [14] and is available here. His will was probated on 31 Jul 1880. He left an estate valued at under £70,000. Administration was granted to three of his sons, William Smith Nicholson of Hoo St Werburgh, Henry Frederick Nicholson Captain of HMS Penelope at sea, and Stuart James Nicholson of St John's Wood Barracks in Middlesex, a Major in the Royal Horse Artillery.[12][15]
The inscription on the Nicholson Family tomb reads:
1841 census. Living in Castle Lodge, Upnor, Kent with his wife, 4 children and 5 servants[6]
1851 census. Occupation: J P For Kent Banker. Living in Medway, Kent with wife, 3 children and servants.[17]
1861 census. Living in Rochester, Kent with his wife Elizabeth and daughter Mary E, and eight servants.[18]
1871 census. Occupation: J P For Kent. Living in Rochester, Kent with his wife and 7 servants.[19]
