James was born in 1854. He was the son of Andrew Nicol and Isabella Brown.

In 1861, at age 7, James is living in Todshill, Strathaven, Lanarkshire with his parents Andrew age 47, Isabella age 45, and his siblings, Robert age 20, Christina age 17, Joseph age 15, Andrew age 10 and William age 3..

In 1871, at age 17, James is living at Denalds Land, Todshill, with his parents Andrew age 57, Isabella age 55, and his brothers Joseph age 25 and William age 13. He is a Printer Camponter ( probably printer compositor).

On 14 Dec 1877, James married Margaret Simpson, the daughter of William Simpson (weaver) and Mary Lilburn, at Alloa, Clackmannan. James is a Letterpress Printer, of 19 Cicely Street, Liverpool.

In 1881, at age 27, James is living at 36 Troughton Street, with his wife Margaret age 25, and their children, Andrew age 2 and Mary age 6 months. James is a Printer - Compositor.
