Biography

Hans Peter was a land owner and had a shoe factory which employed six workers. They bought and tanned hides, measured feet and sold finished boots and shoes. He wanted to be a doctor, but his father said "no." So he read the book and learned to be a doctor on his own. He worked with the sick at night, free of charge. To Hans and Catherine were born 11 children. Four came to America, and the others died young. Those who came were: Nels Nelson, Wichita, Kansas Madsen Nelson, Clearwater, Kansas Mrs. Anna Margrethe Neilson, wife of August Hybskmann, Centralia, Kansas Mrs. Theodora Christina Neilson Christianson, Corning, Kansas The men had to work as an apprentice for four years to become shoemakers not just cobblers. The women each learnd a trade, either dressmaking or weaving beautiful cloth. All the women of the family were skilled in knitting and spinning and were excellent cooks. A month's supply of bread was baked at one time in an outdoor oven – likely pretty heavy work. The Neilson home was brick duplex. A brother-in-law in the other side. All of these people were bright, intelligent, respectable citizens, who reared families and supported themselves and families and helped the poor. They were devout, religious people. There were 29 grandchildren born to Hans Peter and Marie Catherine Neilson.[1]

The Neilson's were all Lutherans. Hans Peter's family home was Borre Jylland. Hans Peter was a man of few words, but when he spoke, others listened. He stopped eating when he could still hold a piece of bread and butter. He told his children to get all the education they could. "It was easy to carry." There was evidence that there was a warm loving spirit in this family.[2]
