Biography

Ray was born 25th September 1912 in Kensington Park, South Australia. He was the son of William Gardner Northcote (1889-1970) and Gertrude Lillian Myrtle (Chamberlain) Northcote (1887-1967). [1]

By the age of 14, Ray was already being included in his father's businesses.

BIRTHDAY PARTY
Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Northcote entertained a number of friends at the Pier Hotel, Glenelg, to celebrate the sixteenth birthday of their son Ray.
The hostess wore pink georgette heavily beaded in crystal.
Mr. Leonard Stone (Balaklava) and Miss Dippe rendered songs and recitations. There were games and guessing competitions, prizes being won by Miss P. Cater, Miss L. Rodda, Mr. Thelan, and Mr. G. Armstrong. Music for dancing was provided by the Lillette Orchestra. Supper was served and Mr. Stone spoke on behalf of the guests, complimenting the host and hostess on the delightful evening provided. Mr. Northcote responded. Dancing continued until 12 o'clock.
Invited guests were Mr. and Mrs. W. C. R. Goldsworthy, Mr. and Mrs. Torr, Mr. and Mrs. Rugless, Mr. and Mrs. Beasley, Mr. and Mrs. Dove, Mr. and Mrs. Munro, Mr. and Mrs. Stone, Mr. and Mrs. Bridgland.

In 1937 he suffered concussion after falling from his motor cycle. [9] He was living at 300 South Terrace, Adelaide, at the time.[10]

Ray had moved to manufacturing margarine by 1941. Margarine was, at the time, subject to strict manufacturing quotas, imposed by the powerful dairy industry in order to protect butter sales. Ray and his father, Will, spent many years struggling to remove these quotas.

PARLIAMENTARY BRIEFS
Council
Margarine Sales.—The Minister of Agriculture told Mr. Halleday(Ind.) that it was correct that certain interstate margarine manufacturers were supplying 15 lb. instead of 12 lb.. as ordered as an inducement to Increase sales. Margarine imports into this State by sea increased from six tons in June to 17 tons in July and 16 tons in August. The amount of margarine allowed to be manufactured in this State was six tons a week. From June to August (13 weeks) M. A. Bell. Ltd., manufactured 69,393 lb.. and R. A. Northcote 18,046 lb.[12][13]

In August 1947, Vidale Products was one of a few companies applying to begin margarine production in Tasmania. [14]

Ray passed away at Ashford Hospital on the 12th December 1970 at the age of 58. He was survived by his wife, Alicia, and his son and daughter. [25]
