Charles served during the Civil War, for the Confederacy, as a Private, enlisting 13 May 1861; and mustered 12 July 1862 as a full 2nd Lieutenant in Co. G, 14th Virginia Cavalry. He was described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall with grey eyes, dark hair and a fair complexion. His occupation when enlisting was recorded as "lawyer".
He was listed in the 1881-1882 Lynchburg City Directory, living at 11th and Polk.
Baltimore Sun, Saturday, 22 Sep 1900:
"Lynchburg, Va., Sept. 21.---Mr. Charles Norvell, for many years a resident of this city, died this morning at his home in Evington, Campbell County, after a brief illness, aged 65 years. Mr. Norvell served in the Civil War and was for two years a prisoner on Johnson's Island. He married Miss Fannie Field, daughter of Judge Richard Field. Besides his widow he leaves five sons--Philip F. Norvell of Pittsburgh; Lorenzo Norvell, a civil engineer of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad; Frank Norvell of Winston, N. C.; Field Norvell of Pittsburgh, and Owen Norvell of Evington."
