John E. Norvell was born and educated in Lynchburg. It is said that he possessed exquisite talents for music and was always willing to use these talents to bring pleasure and cheerfulness to others. Five children were born to him and Elizabeth. He was listed in the 1840 Kanawha County Virginia Tax List, showing that he owned one slave.
