Biography

Robert James Nurcombe was born about 1823 in Somerset, England, most likely in Watchet or Wiveliscombe. He was the son of Benjamin Collard Nurcombe and Sarah Wedlake.[1]

Robert was a ship's captain and voyaged between England and Australia and locally between the ports in Australia. He seems to have initially arrived in Australia about 1848.

On 24 December 1852, Robert Nurcombe, Captain of the "Shamrock", arrived in Sydney from Port Phillip in Victoria. On board was his fiancee, Annie Browne.

Robert Nurcombe and Annie Browne married on 29 December 1852 at St James' Anglican Church, Sydney. Witnesses were Edward Nurcombe of Palmer St and N A Port of Palmer St.[2]

Robert and Annie had five children in Sydney then four in Rockhampton:

Robert was initiated into the United Grand Lodge of Freemasons, Leichhardt Lodge in Rockhampton on 3 June 1863 at the age of 40, [3]

In 1874, he held a publican's licence for the Square and Compass Hotel, Bolsover St, Rockhampton.[4]

Robert Nurcombe died of general debility, at the age of 56, on 20 June 1879 in Rockhampton, Queensland. He was buried on 21 June at South Rockhampton Cemetery, Queensland, Church of England, Section 37, Burial Number 1285.[5][6][1]
