Biography

William was a Friend (Quaker)

Note: O'Neall has been spelled in several ways (O'Neill, O'Neall, O'Neal). For the purposes of this profile, the spelling used is the same as the legal document filed in 1786. [1]

William O'Neall was born to Hugh and Anne (Cox) O'Neall on November 5, 1734 in Christiana, New Castle, Delaware. [2] William and his wife Mary (Frost) O'Neall were the parents of 8 children:

  • Abijah, born 01/22/1762
  • Sarah, born 07/18/1764
  • Hugh, born 06/09/1767
  • William, born 02/14/1770
  • John, born 03/16/1773
  • Henry, born 01/10/1776
  • Thomas, born 02/02/1779

William, though a Quaker and opposed to war, provided supplies and assistance to those in need during the Revolutionary War. He is recognized as a Patriot Ancestor by SAR and DAR for his contributions.[4] He is said to have given his horse to Captain Caldwell of Colonel Thompson's regiment, to aid in his escape from William Cunningham, the British renegade. [5]

William passed away on November 5, 1786 in Bush River, Newberry County, South Carolina. He was buried November 6, 1786 at Bush River Quaker Cemetery. [6][7] His will went into probate on October 3, 1787 and was proven on 15 Mar 1788. [8] [9]

  • Son; Abijah O'Neal, plantation on which he lives along with 2 small pieces of land of another survey, on the south and west sides of that part of aforementioned laid out to Benj. Heaton
  • Son; Hugh O'Neal, grist mill with as much land as lies between the road from the ford below the mill to John Elamans and the Bush River
  • Son; Wm. O'Neal, sawmill with land between his brother Hugh's lot and land sold to Patrick Palmore on the north side of Bush River, and on the south side as much as will be taken in by a straight line from the mouth og the branch where Palmer's corner is to Shop Spring then down the branch to the river.
  • Son; John O'Neal, land on south side of Bush River joining Nehemiah Thomas, my mill, his brother Wm's Line.
  • Son; Henry O'Neal, land between his brother John and James Brooks, adjoining Coates, Kings, and Hinson's land.
  • Wife; Mary O'Neal, land I now live on West side of Bush River adjoining Abijah, Henry, and Wm's lots, during her natural life. When marries or dies, to go to son Thomas O'Neal, who is under age at this time.
  • Dau; Sarah Foard, 40 pounds besides what she now has, and a small piece of land joining Elijah Ford, John Elaman, and my son Thomas.
  • Wm. Pearson and Henry Stedham, Trustees to my children so that children's shares are of equal value.
  • Executors: 3 sons, Hugh, Abijah, and William.
  • Witnesses: Elisha Ford, David Hollingsworth, John Sanders.
