Biography

Elizabeth Odell, daughter of James Odell and Martha Prather,[1] was born before 1755 at Prince George’s County, Maryland. The estimate of her birth year is based on the assumption that she was at least 16 years old when she married Nathan Garrott (in 1770 or earlier), and at least 17 years old when she gave birth to her son Nathan Odell Garrott (born in 1771 or earlier).

Nathan Garrott and Elizabeth Odell were married before 1771 in Maryland. Elizabeth’s brother, Thomas Odell, married Nathan Garrott’s sister, whose given name is still unknown [it was not Elizabeth as commonly believed]. Both couples had only one child. Nathan Garrott and Elizabeth Odell named their son Nathan Odell Garrott. Thomas Odell and Unknown Garrott named their son Nathan Garrott Odell.

On 24 December 1771, at Frederick County, Maryland, Elizabeth Garrett was named Executrix in the will of her husband, Nathan Garrett. She was bequeathed the residue of Nathan’s estate, and, in case her son did not live to the age of 18 years, "a Negro Girl named Sarah together with her issue" (Will Book A-1, page 431).[2]

Elizabeth’s son, Nathan Odell Garrett, was named in the Will of his grandfather, John Garrott, on 21 September 1775 (probate 15 May 1776) at Frederick County. He was bequeathed £10.[3][4]

As of 11 August 1779, Elizabeth had not remarried and was probably still living in Montgomery County (formed from Frederick County in September 1776). Her father, James Odell, had died in 1763 but probate of his estate continued for many years, for it wasn’t until 11 August 1779 when a final account was recorded by Elizabeth’s mother, Martha Lazenby:

"The account of Martha Lazenby Adm of James Odle deceased . . . Of a Negro Girl named Sarah paid by this account’t to Elizabeth Garrett one of the Children of the deceased in part of her distributive share….26 [£]" (Montgomery County, Record Book A, folios 232-235).[1] [5]

According to Sharon J. Doliante, in her book Maryland and Virginia Colonials, Elizabeth's son went by the name of Odell Garrett and moved to South Carolina, though it was not known if Elizabeth also moved there, or if she remarried after Nathan Garrott's death (p. 559). She also stated: "None of the births of the children of Thomas and Margaret have ever been located in any of the extant old Maryland Parish Records [which] prevents us from being absolutely certain that we have identified all of their children – and from knowing the precise order of their births." (p. 461).[1]

Odell-536 and Odell-458 appear to represent the same person because:

Same as sister Charlotte - James is her father. Doliante also names one husband and one son by that marriage (see bio section of Odell-458).
