Biography

Born prior to 1172, Gilbert, son of Gillebride, Earl of Angus; received a charter of Purin, Ogguluin and Kinminethen (now Pourie, Ogilvie, and Kilmundi) from King William.[1][2]

He was witness to a charter granted by his brother, Gille Christ, of a church at Monifieth, in Angus, about 1201.[3]

He was the progenitor of the Ogilvie family.[4]

Research Notes

  • By following Scots Peerage, it appears that Gilbert should have a son named Alexander, who was succeeded by Patrick, which explains the mismatched date warnings.

It is more likely that Gilbert died at Hatton of Ogilvy in the parish of Glamis or at Powrie by Dundee.

Auchterhouse came to his descendant Walter by marriage into the Ramsay family of Auchterhouse 200 years later!.

The father that is linked to him died almost 40 years before he was born. I think more research is needed on Gilbert Ogilvie parentage
