Adela Ruth Ogilvie was born on,6 September 1905 , to David Menzies and Barbara Jane Kaye Ogilvie in Clarance, Cedar,Iowa, USA. [1]Adela was the youngest of eight children born to David and Barbara.
As a young child Adela, she preferred Ruth, lived in many places. David was a Presbyterian Minister and the family moved to follow the needs of the Church. David left the Church in Clarance in 1907 and moved to Sandwich, Illinois[2] where they lived for seven years. The family then moved on to Hot Springs, North Carolina, where they lived for a year. The last station for the younger part of the family was Dresden, Ohio at the First Presbyterian Church,some of the older children stayed in Illinois. They lived in Jefferson, Ohio.[3] By 1917, the family was nicely settled in the Dresden area and Ruth was taught to cook and can foods like many young woman in the small towns of America at that time. She was an excellent study and actually won a trip to Washington D.C. for her canning abilities.
While attending school Ruth was a diligent student, and by the time she finished High School in Dresden she was ready to attend Wooster College, in Wooster Ohio. Where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in 1928 [5] by 1930 she was teaching, Doylestown, Wayne, Ohio. [6]This is one of the places that she met her future husband Willard W. McCartney. They also attended church together. Where I am told they officially met. Willard was still at home in the 1930 census, it would make sense that they attended church in Doylestown, perhaps a local Presbyterian Church;
Willard and Ruth were married at The FIrst Presbyterian Church in Newark, Licking, Ohio. Her father Rev. David Ogilvie officiated along with Rev Mark Maharg.[7]
The couple may have lived in Newark for a while as both of their children were born in Newark between 1935 and 1940. In 1940 we find the small family in Mayfield, Cuyahoga, Ohio.[8] Willard, Ruth and the boys move again to their home in Kirtland, Lake, Ohio. Willard and Ruth will live out their lives in this home.
Ruth retired from teaching when she married, as at that time teachers were to remain unmarried. She soon found plenty to do as she had the two little ones at home to teach, she and her sister Florence taught the boys to play the piano.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Old South UCC[9] in Kirtland as well as the organist at the church for a time.
The home in Kirtland was on about 4 acres, they had a strawberry field, she soon became known as the “Strawberry Lady”, Willard over time planted an orchard with apples, peaches, plums, pears and a truck farm with vegetables.Soon she was selling and tending to produce from the farm. She ran the booth on the honor system, if she was not available, she left bags for produce and money can which to pay. I believe they continued this practice till they no longer had the fruit stand.
Ruth was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1984, she lost her battle from this dreaded disease on 3 April 1985, in North Fort Myers, Lee, Florida. [10]She was under the care of her sister Florence and Willard at the time of her passing.
Ruth was laid to rest at South Cememtery in Kirtland, Lake, Ohio, USA on the 27 April 1985.[11][12]
