Robert Old was born on 1 January 1820 in St Mawgan, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, son of Richard Old and Jane Liddicoat.
Robert (25) married Maria Williams Wills (17) on 9 March 1845 in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. Their children were:
- Sarah Ellen Old
- Elizabeth Jane Ricard Old (1846–1910)
