Son of John Olmste(a)d (1729-c1778) and Abigail Munson (1739-1806).

In his boyhood, June 1776, Lemuel entered the continental Army in Col. Philip Burr Bradley's battalion; was taken prisoner and confined in the prison ship in NY harbor, where his health was seriously undermined. He fortunately escaped with his life, and after recruiting his health for a short time, reentered the service and continued to the end of the war. The family of Silence Weed, his wife, were from Glasgow, Scotland. She was well educated and remarkable for beauty, grace and good sense.

After his marriage he first settled in Danbury, CT, removing in the early Spring of 1786 to Stillwater (afterward called Malta), Saratoga, NY and settled about a mile north of Round Lake. Notwithstanding his impaired health, he was an active and influential pioneer, and raised a family of sturdy and self-relient children, who survied to praise him. His widow survived him many years, living on the homestead which her husband had carved out of the wilderness. She was buried beside him.

The 1790 census confirms Lemeul to be living at Stillwater, the household consists of: 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, and 2 females.

An indenture dated 31 May 1821 states that Lemuel Olmsted of Malta, Saratoga County, having died intestate leaving Zalmon Olmsted, Coleman Olmsted, Joshua Olmsted, John Olmsted, James M. Olmsted and Polly Olmsted his children and heirs at law several parcels. This indenture between Zalmon Olmsted and Rebecka his wife of Malta and Joshua Olmsted and Salome his wife of Stillwater, Saratoga County, NY parties of the first part and Coleman Olmsted of Malta party of the second part witness that the parties of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of $500 sell to Coleman Olmsted a certain parcel of land in Malta purchased by the said Lemuel Olmsted on 1 Nov 1792 from David Bidwell and others, . . . containing just over 13 acres. Recorded 11Nov 1825.
