Note H161Jesse Osburn
Birth: 1780

Death: 1862

Kentucky, USA
Jesse Osburn (and this is the correct spelling of his surname) was born in about 1780 in North Carolina and died about 1863 in Johnson Co., Kentucky, near Flat Gap. According to a book by family historian, Josie Walker Blakey it was written in a letter from 1865 that "On the point of a ridge overlooking Mud Lick and mouth of Jesse Osburn's Little Creek, there is a very old graveyard...I am told that one can count five or six graves there from the old unmarked field stones. Walter Estep who now lives on Patterson Creek (formerly Jesse Osburn's Little Creek) told me about the graveyard. He is in his early sixties, and he said that Mantford Lemaster had told him with assurance that Jesse Osburn is buried there."
Jessie was married to Sarah "Elizabeth" Lemaster 18 February 1807 in Knox Co., Kentucky. They had ten children: Levina (Mrs. Wm. Henson), Sarah (Mrs. Samuel Seagraves), Jonathan Osburn, Lewis Osburn, Edmund J. "Ed" Osburn, Nancy Jane (Mrs. Wiley Blevins), Mary Ann "Aunt Pop" (Mrs. John Winkle), Wilkerson Osburn, Andrew Osburn, and Henry Osburn.

Generation No. 1
1. JESSE2 OSBURN (WILLIAM X.1)1 was born Abt. 1780 in North Carolina1, and died 1863 in Johnson County, Kentucky1. He married (1) ELIZABETH SPARKS. She died Unknown. He married (2) ELIZABETH SPARKS. She died Unknown. He married (3) ELIZABETH LEMASTER2,3 February 18, 1809 in Knox County, Kentucky3, daughter of ELEAZER LEMASTER and MACHELLE TACKETT. She was born 1790 in Amherst Co. Va.4, and died Bet. 1860 - 1870 in Johnson Co., KY.
Notes for JESSE OSBURN:
Sarah was likely Jesse's second wife. Evidence: 1810 census for Knox Co, and 1820 and 1830 censuses for Floy Co, report 3 children born before 1810, two of whom were girls. The two girs are positively identified as Lavina who Married William Henson, and Sarah who married Samuel Sagraves.
It is possible, however, that Sarah Elizabeth was Jesse's only wife. In these times many marrieages were not formalized for some years because of long periods between availability of ministers and JPs, etc.
Have see Elizabeth Sparks listed as wife, but no hard data yet.
Jesse and Sarah Elizabeth L. both came from Lee Co., VA to Knox Co., VA at about the sam time (1802-1804), and settled in the part of Knox Co., that became Harlan Co. in 1819. As Lee Co., VA and Harlan Co., KY are adjoining, it is presumed that their move was a relatively short one. Jesse and Eleazer L. left Knox Co., about 1815 and both settled permanently on adjoining land on Mud Lick Creek less than 2 miles from Flat Gap. Both families appear in the 1820 and 1830 Floyd/John co. Census. The 1850 Johnson Co., Census lists Eleazer L. age 90 living with Jesse Osburn family.
Notes for ELIZABETH LEMASTER:
According to Blakely, p. 19, Elizabeth's family moved from Amherst Co., VA to Spartenburg Co., SC during 1790. The 1850 census says NC, and the 1860 Census says VA.
Children of JESSE OSBURN and ELIZABETH LEMASTER are:

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jesse by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jesse:

Osborne-1875 and Osborne-1285 do not represent the same person because: born in different centuries.
Osborne-1285 and Osborne-9215 appear to represent the same person because: profiles represent the same person

There are two statements with different dates of birth and death, do you have sources and, can you please add a birth location? I believe that the death location is incorrect. This Jesse Osborne appears to be a duplicate of the original profile for Jesse Osborne. Jesse Osborne-1285 is the one that married Dorothy James in Rutherford, Tennessee. If this is the same person can you please add sources and merge the profiles?

I believe someone is conflating two different Jesse Osburn's. The one who married Dorothy James was born about 1880 in Tennessee; married Dorothy in 1805 in Rutherford County, Tennessee. He was living in Limestone County, Alabama in 1830 and Shelby County, Tennessee by 1840. The last census record of Jesse and Dorothy is 1850 in District 1, Shelby County, Tennessee. The 1850 census provides South Carolina as a birthplace.

According to info in the notes previously entered on this profile, and to Osborne Origins (source just added), Jesse's parents would be William Osburn and Matilda Buchanan. However the bio on the Find-a-grave site (source just added) indicates some doubt. Whichever set of parents is correct, a note concerning the other purported set of parents should be added. This for clarity, since apparently conflicting info is out there.
