Lewis Outlaw Jr was born 19 March 1819 (birth date inscribed on tombstone) in Duplin County, North Carolina. Some researchers believe his middle name was Henry, but no sources have been found to verify that belief. The name inscribed on his tombstone is Lewis Outlaw. He was the son of Lewis Outlaw and Elizabeth Whitfield.[1]
After his service in the Mexican-American War, he was first married to Charlotte Smith[1] about 3 January 1850. [citation needed]for specific date.
He was married a second time 7 July 1866 in Wayne County, North Carolina to Caty Herring.[1][2]
Military Service
During the Mexican-American War he served as Sergeant in the North Carolina First Regiment of Foot Volunteers, Company B. This company was organized by Henry Roberts at Goldsboro in January 1847 and was called into service at Smithville on 1 February 1847 and was honorably discharged at Fort Monroe, Virginia on 28 February 1848.[3][4]

He died 24 October 1899 and was buried at Outlaw-Smith Cemetery.[5]
