Biography

Thomas was born about 1716 the child of Thomas Owen and Sarah Unknown. He was baptised 25 July 1716 in Topsham, Devon where his name is given as Thomas Owins.[1]

Thomas Owen, cooper, married Honour Miller on 17 April 1738 at St Leonard, Exeter, Devon.[2] It is believed that the Thomas Owen, cooper, was this Thomas Owen, see below.

Research Notes

The Thomas Owen being apprenticed to James Binford, wine cooper, of Exeter in 1728 is likely this Thomas Owen.[3] Our Thomas would have been 12 in 1728 which was a normal age for apprentices and his father Thomas was likely a carpenter working in the shipyards of Topsham. A 1730 Exeter Land Deed [4] refers to a Thomas Owen, carpenter, of Exeter, with wife Sarah and brother John, being son of Thomas Owen and his wife Jane.
