A farmer before enlistment, Private John Thomas Oxman served in G Company of the NZ Rifle Brigade, 1st Canterbury Infantry Battalion during WW1 -- see Service Number 44146. He gave his next-of-kin as Mrs J. Oxnam (mother), Longford, Murchison in Nelson province, New Zealand. He embarked 14 Mar 1917-21 May 1917 to Devonport, England aboard HMNZT 79 the Ruapehu. He was killed in action 12 October 1917 in the battle of Passchendaele at Ypres, Belgium and is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium (Grave reference XXXII. G. 9_
