Biography

Elizabeth Paige was born circa 1515, probably at Arlesey, Bedfordshire, the daughter of Richard Page (____ - 1522) and Cicily Greene Page (____ - aft 1521). She gave birth in 1560 so 1515 is probably the earliest birthdate, and probably closer to 1520.

Elizabeth's father Richard PAGE of Arlesey, Bedfordshire, England wrote his will there 25 Apr 1521 and it was probated there 24 May 1522. Whilst her brother was left a specific bequest there is no mention of Elizabeth by name, just "To wife Cecily all household stuff with which to help herself and his children", the implication being there was more than one child living in 1521.

The Visitation of Bedfordshire 1566 shows this about Elizabeth — the daughter of Richard Page of Arlesey and Cicely Greene of Stotfold, "Elizabeth first maryed to Michael Coper of Arlesey in com. Bedf. yeoman, after to Jasper Smithe of Arlesey aforesayd, yeoman". It shows her as having one sibling, John.[1]

Elizabeth married Michael Cooper (1510 - 1566) circa 1537. Their first known son, John, was baptised at Arlesey, Bedfordshire on 15 Oct 1538.[2]

Son Edmund Cooper (1542 - 1619) was baptized 1 Dec 1542 at Arlesey, Bedfordshire, son of Michael Cooper, with, as was usual at the time, no mother named.[3][4]

Elizabeth married Jasper Smythe after the death of her husband Michael; they baptised a son, Jasper, at Henlow, Bedfordshire on 5 Sep 1560.

Elizabeth appears to have had a dispute with her brother John Page, for in 1566 her husband Jasper Smythe of Arlesey, Co. Bedf. gent. gave a bond for £100 to Reginald Graye and Robert Newdygate, esquires, to observe an award dated 26 Sept. last settling disputes between the said Jasper and Elizabeth his wife, and John Page, of Arlesey, gent. and Margaret his wife, made by the command of the said Reginald and Robert. Dated, 10 Oct. 8 Eliz (1566).[5]

Elizabeth appears to have been alive on 1 Apr 1569.

There's no such burial in Arlesey parish register at any time, so I take it with a large pinch of salt. I don't regard FindA Grave as a reliable source for that period. It's as reliable as the research done by whoever added the entry. The date seems to come from Robert Leigh Ward's paper in which he refers to a charter of 1 Apr 1569 in which Jasper Smythe held land in right of his wife Elizabeth. RLW was using this charter to prove the existence of Elizabeth's second marriage, not that Elizabeth died on that day. The best that can be said is that Elizabeth appears to have been alive on 1 Apr 1569.
