Biography

Charles Hamilton Paine, b. Mar. 27, 1853; d. Sept. 23, 1909, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston; m. Jan. 20, 1892, Lucy Grundy Tate of Stanford, Kentucky, b. Apr. 27, 1868, dau. of William P. and Louise Rose Tate of Virginia. The three daughters of Lucy and Charles were born at the Perrin Street home in Roxbury. Charles and family spent several summers abroad, then settled in Pads, in a beautiful corner house with courtyard on Avenue Bois de Boulogne, opposite Castellani's. They removed the furnishings from 29 Fairfield Street, Boston, at the corner of Commonwealth Avenue, their home for years. Charles' collection of paintings, largely from Vose and Sons, was valuable and beautiful. His hobbies were music and art. After Charles' death. Lucy married the Due de Choiseul of France and lived in a large chateau, part of it being of the fifteenth century, located at Cleres, north-west of Paris. After eight years she procured a divorce. During the war, she bought the Prieurie in Le Bourget. Savoy, the "Cradle of the House of Savoy," reigning house of Italy, a religious house built as part of a church, the cloister of which is very beautiful. Her collections make it a museum. She was obliged to obtain permission from the French Government to make the smallest changes or repairs. She entertained many of the soldiers of the American Expeditionary Forces. She, her daughter Margaret, and George de Spirlet (who as a shellshocked Belgian soldier visited her, and remained for years as secretary) went to Central Africa on an elephant hunt. CHARLES H. PAINE DEAD: He Was Formerly Identified with Boston Banking Interests, but for Several Year. Had Resided Abroad

Charles Hamilton Paine, formerly ac-tively engaged in financial affairs in Bos-ton but retired for several years, died last evening at the Massachusetts General Hospital, whither he had gone the first at the week. Mr. Paine was born at Merrimac, in March, 1858, the son of Rev. Albert and Sarah Sargent Paine. He went West, and at Beloit prepared to enter Oberlin College, but changing his mind he came back to Boston to enter mercantile life. He first went with the wholesale grocery firm of S. W. Meriam + Co. of South Market street, remaining there for several years. Then he associated himself with the National Union Bank of Boston, where he remained until he joined the banking house of Paine, Webber + Co.. which had been established in 1880, the two other members of the firm being his brother, William A. Paine and Wallace G. Webber He retired from the firm several years ago, since which time he had spent much of his time abroad, where his Paris home was at 38 Avenue Bois do Boulogno. He was a member of the Algonquin Club, Boston Athletic Association and Tedesco Country Club, and a life member of The Country Club. While in active business life he was a Member of both the Boston and New York Stock Exchanges. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Lucy 0. Tate of Kentucky, and three daughters. His wife and two of the daughters, are abroad and funeral arrangemants will not be made until their return. Had a Large Fortune and Lived Most of Time in Paris. Was a Director in Several Copper Companies. Charles H. Paine, brother for William A. Paine and formerly a member of the firm of Paine Webber + Co. died at 7:45 last evening. He was stricken with a recurrence of his last winter's illness on Monday and never rallied. Mt Paine suffered from, a complication of kidney troubles. Charles Hamilton Paine was the son of Rev. Albert and Sarah Sargent Paine, and was born in March. 1853. He was therefore 56 years of age. Miss Lucy G. Tate of Kentucky married him in 1892. He left his wife and three daughters - Louise, Sarah and Margaret. His Bos-ton house was at 29 Fairfield St. corner Of Commonwealth Ave. His house in Paris was 58 avenue de Bois du Bou-logne. Mr. Paine, was born in Merrimac, Mass. He attended preparatory school At Beloit, Wis, and afterward Oberlin University. From 1870 to 1875 he was was with the wholesale grocery of S. + W. Merriam company, South Market at. Boston. From '75 to '81 he was with the national Union Bank of Boston, and in 1881 he entered the firm of Paine. Webber + Co. which was established, in 1880, having as his partners his brother. William A. Paine. and Wallace G.Webber, Mr Paine retired from the firm several years ago and has been living a greater part of the time abroad. He is survived by his brother William and by a sister, wife of Rev William W, Evens of Roxbury. Mr Paine was a member of the Alqonquin, Exchange, Boston athletic and Tedesco clubs, and a life member of the Brookline country club. He left a large. Mr. Paine was a director In the following copper mining companies: Arizona Commercial Champion, Copper Range, Copper Range Consolidated, Michigan Smelting and Trimountain.
