Biography

William Parker Sr. was an Appalachian.

William Parker was born about 1765 in Surry Co. NC. (The 1810 census indicates that he was over age 45.) His father Jonathan Parker died there in 1808 and left a will naming William as son. William most likely named his youngest daughter after his mother Letitia/Leticia and his son Jonathan after his father. [1]

On 8 March 1796 William Parker of Spartanburg Co., SC purchased 100 acres on Cedar Shoal Creek of the Enoree River. (Spartanburg Co., SC Deed Book F: 344-345).

He married Elizabeth Smith, daughter of William Smith of Union Co., SC. The young couple is shown on the 1790 census in neighboring Spartanburg Co., SC with one young son. There is a quit claim deed in Union Co. naming the heirs of William Smith that included his daughter Elizabeth "wife of William Parker."

In 1790 William Parker purchased 100 acres on Praters Creek of the Tyger River in Spartanburg Co. SC (Spartanburg Co. SC Deed Bk B: 493:494).

William and Elizabeth Parker were still in Spartanburg Co., SC in 1800. (Wm. Parker household 1800 US. Census, Spartanburg Co., SC, p. 194. 3 males under 10, 1 male 26-45; 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-45.)

On 1 June 1802, William Parker and wife Elizabeth sold the 100 acres they owned on Cedar Shoal Creek. (Spartanburg Co., SC Deed Bk H: 243-245.)

The William Parker family did not reappear on the 1810 Spartanburg Co., SC census; they had moved to the Gloucester community of what is now Transylvania Co., NC, but was then Buncombe Co., NC.

By 1820 that area had become Haywood County, NC. William as "William Sr." is listed on the 1820 and 1830 censuses of Haywood Co.

In 1835 William Sr. and his sons William Jr., Solomon, John and Pleasant were named on a voters list of Haywood Co. [2]

Henderson Co., NC was formed in 1838 from Haywood Co. and William was enumerated on the 1840 Henderson Co., NC census . He and his wife were in their seventies and they had a female in her thirties and a young male less than five years of age in their household. They younger female was most likely their unmarried daughter Leticia and her son William J. Parker.

William died before the 1850 census enumeration, but the widowed Elizabeth, with her daughter Leticia "Letta", Leticia's sons William and George are shown on the Haywood Co. census.

It is often reported on the Internet that William married Martha Pleasant Anderson. There is no evidence that this woman existed. It is also reported on the Internet that William and this Martha are buried in the Mack McCall Cemetery in Transylvania Co. This is conjecture. There are no markers there for William or a wife. He probably is buried there, but this is not proven.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

I believe William named his lst two sons Jonathan and William S. Parker after his father Jonathan Parker and his father-in-law William Smith. His youngest daughter he named after his mother Letitia "Letta" "Letsey". This youngest daughter Leticia was living with her cousin Martin Parker in 1870. Martin was son of Joseph, grandson of Jonathan and Letitia. Also I have dna matches with descendants of Jonathan and Letitia's son Squire Parker.
For those descendants out there with autosomal dna tests- search for matches with Catherine Smith/Nathan Langston as ancestors, since Smiths are so hard to tract. Catherine was Elizabeth Smith's sister and I have lots of dna matches with her descendants and descendants of Elizabeth Smith's other siblings including Milley Smith Edwards, Mary Smith Langston and her brother Soloman Smith.
There is no evidence that a wife Martha Pleasant Anderson ever existed. There are no markers in the Mack McCall cemetery for William or a wife. This is conjecture. Elizabeth Parker and her youngest daughter Leticia are on the 1850 census.

Elizabeth Parker household, 1850 US Census, Haywood County, North Carolina, p. 191. Elizabeth Parker, age 80, born SC: Letta, age 44, born SC; William, age 14, born NC: ?George, age 8, born NC.

  • This would be Elizabeth, widow of William Parker Sr, with her daughter Leticia "Lettie or Latta" and Leticia's two sons born out of wedlock.
There is no evidence that this man was William Soloman Parker. In all the records his is just "William Parker". He had a son William S. Parker Jr., but I believe that son may have been named "William Smith Parker" after his maternal grandfather. There was another son named Soloman Parker. I do not believe that William Sr had two sons named "Soloman."
