Elizabeth Pa[r]tridge was born in the town of Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut, in 1771 a daughter of James Partridge and Elizabeth Stephens. Record of her birth has not been located. Sources differ on the specific date of her birth in 1771. The Albany Hilltowns website states January 23, a family bible record states April 23,[1] and Find-A-Grave states July 23 (no source given). Of these specific dates, only the July 23 date is consistent with the ages recorded on both the 1855 census and her gravestone.
By about 1788 her birth family removed to Albany County, New York, where her father James Partridge became a tenant in the Colonie of Rensselaerswyck. James Partridge is listed in Rensselaerwyck Manor Papers in connection with the lease of a farm, Lot 82, 120 acres, on April 14, 1788.[2]
She married David Van Auken. From a family bible record, the children of David Van Auken and Elizabeth Patridge were:[1]
The 1830 U.S. Census for the town of Knox, Albany County, New York, has entries for David Van Auken (this woman's husband) and David Van Auken 2nd (their son). The senior David Van Auken is listed as head of a household consisting of one male and one female age 50 to 59 (David and Elizabeth), one male and two females age 20 to 29, and two males and one female age 15 to 19 (eight people in total, all free white persons).[3]
In June 1855, the 1855 New York State Census recorded Elizabeth Van Auken, age 83 and a widow, in the town of Knox, Albany County, New York, in the household of her 45-year-old son David Van Auken and his wife Maria, also age 45, and their children. Elizabeth was recorded as a native of Connecticut who had lived in "this city or town" for 60 years.[4]
She died on 8 February 1858 in the town of Knox, Albany County, New York, and is buried in the Old Knox Cemetery there. The inscription on her gravestone reads: [5][6]
