Biography

Elizabeth Paxton was born ca. 1760 of John Paxton and Mary (Blair) Paxton, and died 1831 in Bakers Creek, TN. She married Major Samuel Houston, 12 February 1781, son of John Houston and Margaret Cunningham. Their children were Samuel (who became General Sam Houston of Texas fame, etc.), William, James, John, Mary, Robert, Paxton, James, Isabella, Eliza, and possibly one more." Memorial stone has "Died in her 74th year." (This would make her death in 1756 or 1757, but above has "ca. 1760.") "Member of Bakers Creek [Presbyterian] Church." "Mother of the famous Sam Houston." A memorial was erected in her honor at the cemetery in 1942 by the Mary Blount Chapter of the D.A.R., Maryville, Tenn.
