Biography

Research Note

Query whether details of two William Paxtons have been conflated on this profile. One William Paxton, was the son of Samuel Paxton and died in the West unmarried.[1]. The other William Paxton was the son of Thomas and married Hannah Abbott.[2]. The birth date of 23 June 1788 has been attributed to both William Paxtons by later researchers. Questions to be resolved in collaboration:

  1. Was there one William Paxton b. 1788 or two?
  2. Who was the father of William Paxton b. 23 June 1788?
  3. Was Hannah Abbott's father-in-law Samuel Paxton or Thomas Paxton?

I can agree there appears to be two different William Paxtons. But my question is, which one do we remove from the Hannah Abbott-57 profile?
My sincere apologies!

1. Yes, there were at least two William Paxtons b. 1788

William Paxton b. 23 June 1788 is son of Samuel Paxton and Sarah (Coalter) Paxton and was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia

William Paxton b. 13 June 1788 is son of Thomas Paxton (III) and at this time still unknown spouse. This William Paxton was born in Botetourt County, Virginia and married Hannah Abbot. The marriage bond gives a date of 6th October Botetourt County. William Paxton makes his mark. The bond is also signed by Andrew Huffman and witnessed by H. Bowyer.

3. Family cousins and researchers say Thomas Paxton is Hannah Abbott's father-in-law.

Again, my apologies for the confusion.

I, for one, do not really care. I was attempting to help a new member to WikiTree resolve the problem of two William Paxtons (Paxton-20 and Paxton-1052) on a profile (Abbott-57) having the same wedding dates. I am hoping that you can somehow help resolve the issue. Thank you.
Paxton-1052 and Paxton-20 do not represent the same person because: Paxton - 1052 is the son of Thomas Paxton (III) and unknown spouse. A birth date is not confirmed, only a year date provided by census records of Botetourt Co., VA (1830, 1840, 1850; Craig Co., VA census 1860. Not found on Craig Co., census for 1870.

The Paxtons: (etc.) We Are One! by William McClung Paxton 1903 page 174 (page 169 Samuel Paxton = Sarah Coalter ) [D] William Paxton, b. June 23, 1788, went West, and died unmarried.

The Paxtons An American History First through Fourth generations by Frank Paxton, Jr. copyrighted 1997, 2007 page 466 - William Paxton, b. June 23, 1788, Served in Va. Militia in War of 1812, d. unmarried. page 478 - William Paxton, b. June 23, 1788, d. after 1860 = Oct. 6, 1813 Hannah Abbott, b. ca 1784, d. ca 1860. I do not agree on the exact birth date, only on the year 1788 which I concluded by studying the census records.

This book (p. 478) also states that William Paxton is the son of Thomas Paxton (III), b. ca 1763, d. 1824 = 1st ___________ = 2nd Dec. 20, 1802 Mary Plott Botetourt Co., Va. His will stated he had a large family, but named only his daughter, Peggy. He served in the War of 1812. (= stands for marriage)

Frank Paxton, Jr. collaborated with many Paxtons to expand on the Wm. M. Paxton book of 1903.

Paxton-1052 and Paxton-20 appear to represent the same person because: Please merge these two profiles. Thanks, lcr
