Member of the House of Burgess, Va. Society of the Cincinnati. Taken prisoner in the Battle of Germantown, Maryland, during the Revolutionary Wars. he did not return to his regiment.[1]
Josias Payne, Jr (son of Josias Payne Sr) was long a resident of Goochland county, but in 1784 removed to that portion of North Carolina which is now Tennessee. He married first, August 23, 1753, Elizabeth, daughter of Tarleton Fleming and secondly, August 19, 1789, at Nash’s Lick (now Nashville, Tennessee) Mary Barnett (Davidson County Records). By the first marriage he had issue: Tarleton b. Feb 21, 1758, Sallly b. Sept 16, 1757, Josias b. Apr 25, 1761, William b. Jan 8, 1768, Elizabeth Chichester b Nov 20, 1769. After the War, he went to North Carolina, in 1784. Then later to what is now Nashville Tn., where he died.
Suffered many hardships with the Nashville Indians, received bounty lands and half pay. Land warrant prior to 1784. Married second wife Mary Barnett.
