Étienne Pellerin was born around 1647, based on his age in the censuses,[1] possibly in France. Genealogist Stephen White does not give a location for his birth.[2] There is no documented proof of the names of his parents. According to Acadian genealogist Bona Arsenault, Étienne was born in 1646 in France and was François Pellerin’s younger brother (Stephen A. White disagrees).[3]

Étienne (27) married Jeanne Savoie (16) (born about 1658 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France; daughter of François Savoie and Catherine Lejeune) in 1675 in Port-Royal, Acadie.[2] They were probably married in Port-Royal since they appear in the 1678 census of Port-Royal with their two daughters age 2 and 6 months.[4] They own 1 arpent of land, and 4 head of cattle. Between about 1676 and 1699 they had ten children: Madeleine, Marie, Pierre, Anne, Jean-Baptiste, Jeanne, Charles (dit Toc), Bernard, Alexandre, Marguerite.

Their known children were:

  1. Madeleine Pellerin (abt. 1676– ) .
  2. Marie Pellerin (1678–abt. 1727) .
  3. Pierre Pellerin (abt. 1682–aft. 1701) .
  4. Anne Pellerin (abt. 1684– ) .
  5. Jean Baptiste Pellerin (1685–1755) .
  6. Jeanne Pellerin (abt. 1688–1758) .
  7. Charles Pellerin (abt. 1690–bef. 1760) .
  8. Bernard Pellerin (abt. 1691–aft. 1730) .
  9. Alexandre Pellerin (abt. 1694–abt. 1770) .
  10. Marguerite Pellerin (abt. 1699–1724)

In 1686, at Port Royal, Estienne [sic] PELLERIN, aged 40, was living with his wife, Jeanne SAVOYE [sic], aged 29, and their five children: Magdelaine [sic], aged 10, Marie, aged 8, Pierre, aged 5, Anne, aged 3, and Jean-Baptiste, aged 1. They lived on 3 arpents of cultivable land with 8 cattle, 12 sheep, and 8 hogs.[5]

In 1693, at Port Royal, Estienne PELERIN, [sic], aged 46, was living with his wife, Jeanne SAVOYE [sic], aged 35, and their six children: Marie, aged 13, Pierre, aged 11, Anne, aged 9, Jean Baptiste, aged 8, Charles, aged 3, and Bernard, aged 2. The family owned 1 gun and was living on 16 arpents of cultivable land with 15 cattle, 20 sheep, and 12 pigs.[6]

Their growing family was counted in Port-Royal again in 1698,[7] 1700,[8] and 1701.[9]

“At one time Étienne owned Hog Island (Île aux Cochons) on Rivière au Dauphin, now the Annapolis River, near Port-Royal. In August 1714, soon after the British took over the colony, Étienne was among the Acadians who traveled to Île Royale, today's Cape Breton Island, aboard the King's vessel La Marie Joseph to look at land with the possibility of removing to the French territory. Evidently, he did not like what he saw on Île Royale and returned to Annapolis Royal, enduring British rule there.” [3][2]

Étienne passed away in Port Royal, Acadia in Nov 1722. The burial record mentions that he was about 80 years old, and he died (date omitted) after having suffered for 18 months due to an illness. He was interred on 17 November 1722.[10][11]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Étienne by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Étienne:

I have records showing Etienne's mother was Marie Jehanne Carpentier (Reams, France B: around 1610) and his father was François Gardner Pellerin (St. Etienne, France B:1616). François's father is Estienne Pellerin and a user on Geni.com has three generations beyond him entered, going back to Jean Pellerin (no years associated).

Ancestry.com has his father's name as François Gardner Sieur DePellerin.

Etienne is my 8X great grandfather.

Hi, Erron, thank you for your note. As I'm sure you read on the profile that there has been controversy/uncertainty over his parents or even where he was born. We would love to see your records, as those would need to be confirmed in order to add parents. Feel free to post them on the profile or email them to the Acadians project [email address removed] Your interest and help with your 8x ggfather is much appreciated.

Andree Martin could not have been Etienne's mother. she was born about 1649; his birth date is 1647.
