Unproven Parents

John Pelton was born in England but his birthplace is unproven. In Pelton Family in America the author states that John was a descendant of "Essex Peltons" but no sources have been found that support this fact. It is unknown if he is the son of Charles Pelton and his wife. No evidence has been found to confirm that Charles is his father.^[1][2]

Biography

Origins

John Pelton could be the John Pelton that was christened at St. Martin, Leicestershire, England on 19 Jan 1611 the son of William Pelton.^[3] This is further supported by Charles Banks in his book, Topographical dictionary of 2885 English emigrants to New England where he states that John arrived from Leicestershire, England.^[4]

The Calendars of wills and administrations relating to the county of Leicester, proved in the Archdeaconry court of Leicester, 1495-1649 show several Peltons including a William.^[5] : *1551 – Pelton, John ; Wigstone *1587 – Pelton, Wm. ; Leicester 46 *1636 – Pelton, Wm. ; Peathnge parva 121 *1642 – Pelton, Wm. ; Leicester 3

Arrival in New England

Henry Whittemore includes this summary of John in his book Genealogical guide to the early settlers of America.

• PELTON: - John. Boston; very early had estate descrip. in the book of possessions; removed to Dorchester; his elder son John was baptised 1645. In his will, 1681, pro March following. he names wife Susanna, sons John, Samuel and Robert, the youngest, beside daughter Mary. To Samuel was given admin. of Robert lost at sea, 1683.^[6]

Although John is not included with a biographical sketch in Anderson's The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, he is listed in the the sketch of his father-in-law Henry Way in Volume 3 on page 1952.^[7] He is also mentioned in the early records of Boston as being a land holder.^[8][9]

John came to Boston about 1630 to 1633 from Leicestershire, England.^[4] According to Meredith Colkert in his book, Founders of Early American families: emigrants from Europe, 1607-1657, John arrived in 1632.^[10][9]

His name and a description of his property appears in the “Book of Possessions,” the oldest land record of Boston, made by order of The General Court in 1634. The record therein on page 34 (entry 91) runs thus: “Mr. Owen Roe his possession in the limits of Boston. One house and garden bounded with the streete north; the lane west; the Cove south; and John Pelton east. On page 87 entry F107 we find "John Pelton’s possession in Boston. One house and household lot bounded with Owen Roe west; the streete north; the Cove south; and the marsh on the east.” ^[8][11] These lands were Lots 104 to 108, on the south side of Essex St., from Washington St., easterly. See the "Map F." or "No. 6" on page 74 where Owen Rowe, (as here spelled,) has lot 107 and John Pelton 108.^[8][12]

"Soon after, in 1635, probably, he removed to Dorchester, then a few miles out of Boston peninsula, now a part of that city, and which had been settled in the same year but a few months earlier. In 1635 or 1636, he became by grant or purchase a joint owner of the Dorchester Patent, and received his share, as also did his heirs in its many divisions."^[1][13][9]

He married Susanna Way, daughter of Henry and Susanna, about 1643. ^[7]

Death

John died in Dorchester 23 January 1680. His will mentions his wife, Susanna, his sons John, Samuel, Robert and his daughter Mary. Susanna probably lived until May 7, 1706.^{[1] [17][18][19]}
