Joshua Pennington was born on 23 February 1778 in Wilkes, North Carolina, the son of Richard Pennington and Hannah (Boone) Pennington. His siblings included Daniel Boone Pennington (1781-1865) and John Stewart Pennington (1784-1859).

When Joshua's parents moved from North Carolina to Kentucky in 1797, he was some 19 or 20 years old and still single; so it is quite likely he went with the family in their various movings about.
Joshua must have been an industrious, hard working farmer, since by 1804 it is found that he owned 100 acres of land on Line Creek in Barren County, Kentucky.
Two years later he married Polly,[1] the daughter of William Gist, and the couple moved to Tennessee sometime later. In the White County, Tennessee court minutes he was listed as a juror 1811-1812.
[It is possible that Polly died earlier than quoted below; to be researched; and Joshua remarried, since the other profile of this merged record quotes: He married Nancy Sparks. Born about 1790, North Carolina. Death 1878, Floyd, KY. Spouse Joshua Pennington. Marriage was in 1815. However, this may be a spurious record.]
The tax list for White County, Tennessee shows that he was taxed on 222.5 acres of land in 1816; and again in 1826 he is mentioned, as is a William Pennington who might have been one of his sons.
In the 1820 White County, TN census, then about 42, is listed having a wife, 2 sons b/t 10 and 16, 3 sons under 10 and 2 daughters also under 10.
On 18 June, 1854 from his home at McMinnville, Tennessee, he wrote about his children as follows: "We had eleven children: we raised six boys and four girls. Our youngest daughter died. They are all married and living as far as I know. My oldest son lives in Illinois. Two sons and one daughter in Texas, one son in the western district of TN. One son and one daughter in Nashville, TN., one son in Smithville, TN, one son and one daughter living near me." From PP1-1, pg 2. Comment- In the above statement about his children- It doesn't add up to 6 boys and 4 girls. It is 7 boys and 3 girls living, so the above statement is in error.
When Polly died on Oct 1839, one son and three daughters were left at home with their father. Within three and a half years they were all married and Joshua was left alone.
On 25 August, 1844 he and Sarah Howard were married. There were no children of this union.[2]
[Second merged reference quoted death as 1873 in McMinnville, Warren, Tennessee; however this death record post-dates the will quoted below, and is probably an erroneous link. It is more likely to relate to another Joshua Pennington.]
JOSHUA & MARY GIST PENNINGTON: I had written for the marriage certificate of Joshua & "Polly." They said the marriage bonds for that year had disappeared & this was sent instead (4 pages from "Marriage Records of Barren County, Kentucky 1799-1849," by Martha Powell Reneau). They said the Pennington/Gist families were in now Monroe Co., & some of the Penningtons were just So. in Tenn. It was mentioned that an I.T.R. (I. or J.) Pennington came up to KY in the Civil War era, and then left for Mississippi. This info was sent to me by a volunteer genealogist, Wm. L. Thomas, 11167 Old Bowling Green Rd. , Smith's Grove, KY 42171. From: BETTY ETHEL, P.O. Box 628, Fredericksburg, TX 78624. [3]

Note: T. J. Couch who signed the indenture for Joshua P. Pennington was undoubtedly Timothy J. Couch (1802-1877) who applied for a grant of land from the State of Tennessee in White Co., TN, on Jan. 30, 1826. The grant was signed by Samuel Houston, Governor of Tennessee, on May 8, 1828. The land adjoining on one side was that of his father-in-law, Thomas Walling.
Timothy Couch was married ca. 1827-8 to Rhoda Walling, dtr. of Thomas and Nancy (Jones) Walling, After Rhoda's death in 1841, he married Susan Jane. Pennington, daughter of Joshua Pennington, Sr. Timothy was 48 years old on the 1850 Census for Warren Co., TN, with North Carolina listed as place of birth. He had four children by Rhoda and ten by Susan Jane. Timothy may have descended from Timothy Couch who married Eunice Perkins in Hartland, Conn. In 1682, a Thomas Crouch of Ammersham, Bucks Co., bought land in W. Jersey. John Couch was a witness on a Canfield deed in New Jersey on Jan. 31, 1684-5. Since the Couch/Crouch names have been found for generations with those of the Penningtons, it may be significant that one of them came from Ammersham. This place has been mentioned several times on Pennington documents and I have now set up a file on the name. Already I have collected some interesting info and clues. [5]
