Emily was born in Cape Colony South Africa on 11 May 1850. She is the daughter of Jesse Penton and Ann Slingo. Emily was christened on 9 June 1850 at Cathedral Church of St Mark, Georgetown.
When she was only 14 years old, on 18 April 1865 at St Jude's Church in Oudtshoorne South Africa, Emily married Frederick Barnes, a carpenter. According to baptism records, their daughter Eliza was born just 2 days later and was christened in the same church on 14 May 1865. We have yet to find evidence of other children coming from the marriage.
Emily passed away in 1936 (while this fact is stated in other research, it appears to be unsourced).
