Biography

John Perkins, son of David Perkins and Martha Howard, was born in 1700 in Bridgewater, Massachusetts and christened 21 Sep 1700 in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.[1] He died 16 Apr 1728 in Plympton, Massachusetts.[2] An inventory of his estate was taken on 20 Oct 1728.[3] In 1729, an allowance out of his estate was made to his widow, Mary and their four children.[3] John is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Plympton. [4]

John lived in Plympton and married Marcy/Mercy Jackson there on 18 Apr 1721 [5] and they had five children, four still living at the time of his death:

He died intestate and on 21 September 1728, his widow Mercy was granted the administration of his estate.[6]

His inventory was taken on 20 October 1728 in Plympton.[7]

Research Notes

  • While many have used the genealogy "An Account of Part of The Family of Abraham Perkins of Hampton, N. H., Who Lived in Plymouth County, Mass." as published in the January, 1896 of the The New England Historical and Genealogical Register as a source for the parentage of John Perkins, there is an error. On page 37, it mentions his probate. When the probate is examined, the children are mentioned but when the older children are requesting a guardian, they state that their grandfather is David Perkins of Bridgeport and not Luke Perkins.[8] This firmly places John as son of David and not Luke.[3]

Perkins-7490 and Perkins-336 appear to represent the same person because: While examining the probate record of John Perkins who married Mercy/Marcy Jackson, there is a letter by the two older children asking the judge to assign their uncle as guardian. In this letter they state that David Perkins, deceased, of Bridgewater is their grandfather. This John had erroneously been assigned parents of Luke Perkins and Martha Conant due to the Register article from the 1890s.

I'm convinced that John married Marcy/Mercy Jackson. The evidence is found in:

Plymouth County, MA: Probate File Papers, 1686-1881. Online database. of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2015. (From records supplied by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Archives.) Online at [https://www.americanancestors.org/DB1558/i/20954/15593-co5/45493721 The probate section on guardianship states that the children's grandfather is David and not Luke.

This would also have him dying in 1728.
