Biography

Private Almond Peterson served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: August 13, 1862
Mustered out: June 22, I865
Side: USA
Regiment(s): Company G 106th New York Infantry

Almond was born in 1839 in Potsdam, St Lawrence County, New York to John and Rachael Peterson.

Between 1850 and 1860 the family moved from Potsdam to nearby Madrid, New York

In 1860 at the age of 20 he was working for a farm in Madrid.

His older brother, Sidney, enlisted in the 14th regiment in 1861, died from wounds sustained in battle at Gettysburg in July of 1863.

In 1862 he enlisted in the 106th New York Volunteer Infantry. He survived the Civil War and mustered out in June 1865 in Washington D.C. with the rest of the infantry.

He came back to New York and married Eliza (Allen - possibly), and they had 5 children before her death around 1873.

He then married Harriet Kilmer around 1875, and together they had 9 children before his death in 1892 (most likely).

He is buried in Camden, NY according to veteran grave notes, which makes sense if his family had been living there since ~1884 based on his children's listed place of birth on their marriage certificates.

Notes

Death

In the 1900 census Harriet is listed as a widow, with a 3 year old daughter Agnes, born in Massachusetts. If Almond is the father, he would have had to die no earlier than 1895, however his pension claim seems to be filed initially in Jan 1892 with a certificate issued in Jan 1893, although Hattie doesn't start collecting money until 1909 (it would appear). The fact he is buried in Camden however, and his daughters born in 1893 and 1897 are born in Greenfield and Massachusetts does seem to suggest he died before they were born which would agree with the pension. New York death index does have a death entry with a date of 18 Jan 1892 which matches the pension.
