Biography

Samuel Phelps immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Samuel Phelps was the son of William Phelps and his first Mary (her maiden surname is unknown). Samuel was probably born in 1621; he was baptized in Crewkerne, Somerset, England on 5 August 1621.^[1]

Samuel Phelps was a passenger on the ship Mary and John in 1630^[2], about 9 or 10 years old at the time, with his father William Phelps, his stepmother Ann (Dover) Phelps, and brothers William, Nathaniel, and Joseph. He and his family first settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Five years later, in 1635, he moved with his family to Windsor, Connecticut Colony.^[3]

Samuel married Sarah Griswold on 10 November 1650 in Windsor, Connecticut.^[4],^[5]

Samuel and Sarah's children (the first three born at Windsor, the remainder at Poquonock:^[6]

"Samuel, had 9 children born in Windsor," a statement dated 17 August 1677, found in the diary/notebook of Matthew Grant, second town clerk of Windsor, from 1651 to 1677, and who removed to Windsor from Dorchester along with Samuel and other passengers of the Mary and John. This statement, by a person with first hand knowledge, demonstrates that the nine children named in the paragraph above, were Samuel's only children.^[7][8]

Samuel died in Windsor on 15 May 1669.^[9]

Samuel's burial location is Palisado Cemetery, Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA^[10]

Samuel Phelps, Windsor, probate inventory taken 29 June 1669, legatees: Sarah the widow, Samuel 17 yrs, Sarah 15 yrs, Timothy 13 yrs, Mary 11 yrs, William 9 yrs, John 7 yrs, Ephraim 6 yrs, Abigail 3 yrs, Josiah 2 yrs next December.^[11]
