During the American Civil War, he enlisted at the age of 19 as a private in the Union army with the Company F, 5th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry (formerly the 13th Regiment).[2] He enrolled on 13 Apr 1862 for the period "during the war with Mo" and he didn't mustered out until 12 Apr 1865.[3]
In 1871 he married his first wife Judith Christianson[4] and they had one son, James Tillmon. After Judith died, in 1874 he married Mary Jane Evans[5] and they had a daughter, Ada (or Addie).[6] After they married, they left Moniteau and moved three counties away to Lafayette, most likely to be near Mary's family.[6] In 1920, the widowed William was living with his daughter, Addie, and her family in Washington, Lafayette, Missouri.[7] William died there in 1928.[8]
