Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
David Phillips was a Virginia colonist.

David was born about 1700 in Richmond County, Virginia. He was the son of William Phillips and Susanna Williams.

David is named in the will of his mother Susanna Williams dated 17 Jan 1725 and entered for probate on 6 Apr 1726 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia. From the terms of the will it is obvious Susannah is a widow. In her will she bequeaths the "land and plantation I now live on" to son David Phillips. David is also appointed executor.[1]

By 1730 David is living in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. He is witness to a deed between his brother William Phillips and Zachary Taylor dated 10 February 1729/30 and recorded at court on 31 March 31 1729/30 in St. George's Parish, Spotsylvania County, Virginia.[2] (Records for David from 1734 on are recorded in Orange County, Virginia which was formed from Spotsylvania County in 1734.)

David married Mary (Unkn) Phillips before 1728 in Richmond County, Virginia. A marriage record has not yet been found, however in a deed of sale between David Phillips and George Thomson on 6 August 1728: "Mary Phillips, the wife of David Phillips, appeared in Court and relinquished her right of dower...."[3]

Land Transactions

Indenture: August 6, 1728

Indenture between David Phillips of County of Richmond and Pish of Northfarnham of one part and George Thomson of the aforesaid County of Pish of other part: Witnesseth that David Phillips in consideracon of 1500 pounds of tobacco to him in hand paid by George Thomson. . .hath and by these presents doth bargain sell and release unto George Thomson. . .all that parcel of land containing 50 acres. . .being a part of a tract of land formerly granted to Jone Loyd, Admrx to Lewis Loyd, deced, containing 159 acres which Patent is dated 2/6/1681. . .Witnesses: Jos: Russell Junr and Thomas Lewis. Mary Phillips, the wife of David Phillips, appeared in Court and relinquished her right of dower in the land conveyed in the Deed unto the said George Thomson. [3]

This 50 acres appears to be land bequeathed to David's mother from his grandmother Joan (Frith) Williams Lloyd in her will dated 8 Jan 1703 and proved in court 2 Feb 1703/4 in Richmond County, Virginia.[4] Lewis Loyd was second husband of Joan (Frith) Williams, mother of David's mother Susannah (Williams) Phillips.

On 3 March 1729/30 David purchased from his brother William Phillips for twenty pounds current Virginia money "one piece or parcel of land or woodland ground containing seventy two acres and a half situate lying and being in St. Georges parish Spotsylvania County ...."[5]

Note: several other transactions and sources can be found on David Phillips (bef 1705-aft 1741).

Research Notes

There is no evidence Jessee Phillips is the son of David Phillips and Mary Unkn. Jessee is said to have been born in 1745 in Pennsylvania and to have also married in Pennsylvania; perhaps died in North Carolina. David Phillips had no connection to Pennsylvania and in the 1740s he was living in Orange County, Virginia. No record has been found naming the children of David Phillips. His wife Mary is known based on her appearance in one deed of sale together with David Phillips in March 1739 in Orange County, Virginia. Jessee Phillips should be removed as son of David and Mary Phillips.
