Biography

May Pickles in born in 1889 in the hamlet of Heptonstall, West Riding of Yorkshire, England [1]. Her birth is registered in Todmorden. Clara was born either in the hamlet of Wadsworth [4] or Mytholmroyd [5]. These hamlets lie just outside of the town of Hebden Bridge. Hebden Bridge is about 50 kilometres northeast of Manchester. Her parents are Greenwood Pickles (1855-1931) and Emma Nix (1855-1936). Her father is a weaver in the cotton mills of Hebden Bridge.

In the 1891 census records, May is one year old, living with her family on Burnley Road in Wadsworth [2]. Her father is a “cotton weaver & confectioner.” In the 1901 census records, the family is now living in Hebden Bridge and May is 11 years old [3]. They are still living in Hebden Bridge in the 1911 census records and May is now 21 years old [4].

We Lose track of May after 1911. There are two marriage records, both registered in Todmorden, that could be her [5][6]. One is in 1915 (May would be about 25 years old) and one is in 1923 (May would be about 34 years old).
