May Pickles in born in 1889 in the hamlet of Heptonstall, West Riding of Yorkshire, England [1]. Her birth is registered in Todmorden. Clara was born either in the hamlet of Wadsworth [4] or Mytholmroyd [5]. These hamlets lie just outside of the town of Hebden Bridge. Hebden Bridge is about 50 kilometres northeast of Manchester. Her parents are Greenwood Pickles (1855-1931) and Emma Nix (1855-1936). Her father is a weaver in the cotton mills of Hebden Bridge.
In the 1891 census records, May is one year old, living with her family on Burnley Road in Wadsworth [2]. Her father is a “cotton weaver & confectioner.” In the 1901 census records, the family is now living in Hebden Bridge and May is 11 years old [3]. They are still living in Hebden Bridge in the 1911 census records and May is now 21 years old [4].
We Lose track of May after 1911. There are two marriage records, both registered in Todmorden, that could be her [5][6]. One is in 1915 (May would be about 25 years old) and one is in 1923 (May would be about 34 years old).

Heptonstall and Wadsworth are hamlets lying on the north side of Hebden Bridge. The family lives on Windsor Road.
