William J. and Matilda, with Florence and Grace, migrated to Canada in 1905 along with Bertram Parker. The 1906 census has Bertrand (Bertram?) Parker and Florence Pilkington working as a hired man and servant at the household of Robert McMillan in the Souris District, subdistrict 19 of Manitoba. There are no records of the rest of the family members for this census. William entered a Homestead Patent for the NE quarter of Section 20, Township 36, Range 15, West of the 2nd Meridian (northeast of Quill Lake, Saskatchewan) January 4, 1907. On February 14, 1910 he submitted a request for title of the land. The submission was supported by the following improvements to the land and residence requirements in the intervening years:

A house of log and lumber 16x24 feet (value $250) was built in Mar 1907 and was occupied the following month by himself, his wife, Matilda and their two daughters, Florence and Grace. Five acres were broken and three were cropped. The livestock consisted of two horses and a ½ share in six cattle. They lived on the farm from Mar 28, 1907 through to June 2 1908.

In 1908 a further five acres were broken and 10 acres were cropped. They now had three horses and ½ share in 10 cattle. They stayed on the farm from Oct 21 to May 1, 1909. In the following year seven acres were cleared and all 17 acres were cropped. They still had three horses but 14 cattle, the latter likely shared with Bertram Parker their future son in law. When the family was not residing on the farm they were visiting Carman, Manitoba. In addition to the above, it appears a second house was present and there was also a 20x30 stable. This could have been constructed by the previous homesteader who decided to “pull up stakes” because the land had too many sloughs on it. There were also 10 fenced acres (value $25) and four wells on the property (value $200). And at the time of the submission William owed money on some seed grain for the following crop year. William received title to the land on June 2, 1910. He was then 41 years old. In the 1911 Canadian census for the Humboldt District Townships, the Pilkington family is registered together as visit #56 by the enumerator and Bertram Parker is registered as visit #55. Arthur Wheatley is registered as #58 living with his younger sister Maud E. Wheatley
