Biography

Flag of Hampshire (adopted 2019)
George Pink was born in Hampshire, England.

George Pink was born on 29 March 1847 in Colemore, Hampshire, England.[1] His birth was registered as the son of Thomas Pink and Harriet Parter on 4 Apr 1847 at Petersfield, Hampshire. His mother, as the birth registration informant, signed her name with an `X' on the registration form, indicating that she couldn't write. This could explain the error in the record of her maiden name as Parter instead of Porter.[2]

George was baptised on 31 October 1847 in Colmer, Hampshire, England, the son of Thomas Howick Pink, a labourer, & Harriet Pink.[3][4]

On 30 March 1851, George, a Scholar aged 4, was living at Colemore with his parents Thomas, a Farm Labourer and Harriet, a Farm Worker. The household included siblings William (12), a Farm Worker; Lucy (10), a Scholar; John (8), a Farm Worker; James (5), a Scholar; Harriett (2), at infant school and Jane (7 months).[5][6]

In the 1861 census on 7 April 1861, George, aged14, was living as a Servant with the family of George Smith in the village of Colemore.[7] This was also the day his father, Thomas, was buried.[8]

On 2 Apr 1871, George was aged 24 and a Gardener living at The Common, Colemore, with his stepfather John Withers (54), an Agricultural Labourer and mother Harriet (54). The household also included George's brother Albert (13), a Shepherd Boy.[9]

George married Arabella West at Colemore on 14 March 1874.[10][11][12]

On 3 April 1881 George, a Domestic Groom and Gardener aged 34, was living at at Well Cottages, Bentworth, Hampshire, with his wife Arabella (26), their children Herbert (5), Edith (3) and William G. (1). The household also included his brother, a lodger, Albert Pink aged 23.[1]

On 5 April 1891, in the 1891 census, George, a Domestic Groom and Gardener aged 43 was living at Manor Cottage, Colemore, with his wife Anabella (37) and 8 children. The children were Herbert (15), a Farm Servant, Edith Olive (13), William George (11), Alice Pink (9), Alfred (5), all Scholars, and infants Anne Maud (3), Eveline May (1), Henry Phillip (3 months).[13]

In the 1901 census on 31 March 1901 George, then aged 54 but recorded as 52, was still living at Colemore as a Groom and Gardener with his wife Arabella (47) and children Alfred (15), a Helper at a Stable, Evelyn Mary Pink (11), Henry Philip (10), Ernest (8), Laura (7), Selena (4), Percy (3) and Elizabeth Amy (9 months).[14]

In the 1911 census on 2 April 1911, George, aged 64 and recorded as a 62-year-old Labourer on Roads for the Rural District Council, lived in the cottage, near the school at Colmore with Arabella and three of his children. The children present were Earnest (18), a Carter on a farm, and Percy (13) and Elizabeth Amy (10), both Scholars.[15]

George's death (age 87) was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1934 in the Petersfield district.[16]
