Biography

Flag of Hampshire (adopted 2019)
William Pink was born in Hampshire, England.

William was born on 7 March 1859 in Faringdon, Hampshire, England and his birth registered at Alton, Hampshire on 28 March 1859 the son of William Pink, a Farm Laborer and Martha Pink, formerly Kemp.[1][2][3][4] He was Christened on 1 May 1859 at the former village of Colemore, Hampshire.[5]

Two years later, in 1861, William was living at Colemore village with his parents William (22) and Martha (24) and his sister Martha (1 month). [6]

By 1871 the family had moved to West Marden, Sussex, England. William was aged 12. The family also comprised his parents, William (32) and Martha ( 34), siblings Agnes (10), Emma (8), Alice (6), Albert (3) and Ruth (9 months) and boarder Thomas Dance (25). [7]

In the 1881 census William (age 22) was a Groom and Domestic Servant living at Stansted Stables, Stoughton, Sussex.[8]

William married Mercy Corbett on 2 September 1886 at Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire, England, Mercy's home town. The witnesses were William's siblings Albert and Agnes.[9] The marriage was registered in the July - September quarter of 1886 in the Stroud district of Gloucestershire.[10]

William and Mercy had no children.

In the 1891 census William (age 32) was living at Rydens Rd, Walton, Surrey, England, with Mercy (32) as a coachman groom, and domestic servant.[3]

In 1901 William, aged 41 and Mercy (42) were visiting Alfred Hill, a Pub Proprietor, and his wife at 5 Rowell Garden Mews, Walton, Surrey. William was a coachman groom. [11]

By 1911 William was 51 and a Licensed Victualler and Inn Keeper at the Nags Head Inn, Regent Street, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire with Mercy. [4]

William's death (age 68) was registered in the October - December quarter of 1927 in the Stroud district of Gloucestershire.[12] He was buried on 3 November 1927 at Minchinhampton.[13]

Occupation

Coachman Groom

At the time of the census in 1881, 1891 and 1901, and when he married in 1886, William was employed as a coachman groom. There were many different forms of this occupation, and it was often combined with other duties, such as in 1881, when William was also employed as a domestic servant. In general, grooms and domestic servants were responsible for many tasks, including caring for horses, cleaning stables, and performing other general maintenance tasks around the stable grounds. Additionally, domestic servants were responsible for cleaning and maintaining the living quarters of the stable owner or manager and performing other household tasks as needed. It is likely that William's duties at Stansted Stables included some combination of these tasks.
