Biography

Franklin Democrat, Friday, 5 June 1908, pg 4 & 5 By the will of the late Nelson M. Pittman, Harry L. and Oscar A. are named as executors to serve without bond. The estate is to remain intact until Elizabeth, the youngest child, finishes her school course. The estate is to be equally divided among the children.

Death of N. M. Pittman. Nelson M. Pittman died Friday morning at the home of A. A. Jones on West Jefferson street from cancer of the liver. He had been in poor health for several years but not until within the last few weeks was he compelled to give up work. He had been connected with the Coil Hoop Factory the past year, having returned to Franklin from Memphis, Tennessee, to be with his youngest daughter, Elizabeth, who was attending the Franklin schools. The funeral services were held Saturday morning at the Presbyterian church conducted by Rev. L. P. Marshall. Burial at Greenlawn. Nelson Moore Pittman was born April 29, 1845, in Monroe county, Ohio, and came to this state with his parents when a boy. He was married January 11, 1872, to Miss Elizabeth Small, daughter of the late William Small. Mrs. Pittman died four years ago in Memphis and her body was brought to Franklin for burial. He is survived by seven children, Harry Pittman and Mrs. Flora Hooker of Portland, Ark., Oscar Pittman of Earle, Ark; Frank Pittman of Baldwin, Miss., Mrs. Anna Cobb of Sun Flower, Miss., Mrs. Nettie Neilson of Memphis and Miss Elizabeth Pittman of this city. Mr. Pittman besides his children leaves seven brothers and sisters. He was the eldest of a family of eight and the first to die. They are Samuel, William, James and Albert Pittman, and Mrs. Jane Hawk, Mrs. Elizabeth McGaw and Mrs. Alice Bright, all residents of Kansas. Mr. Pittman was a man of strict integrity and of great industry. His life had been a busy one up to its very close. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity of the Presbyterian church and lived a life consistent with the teachings and principles of the order and of the church. He was ever devoted to his family, a supporter of every worthy enterprise and a good neighbor and friend.

Nelson M. Pittman was born in 1845. He was a son of Issac R. Pittman and Elizabeth Jane Moore Pittman. He was the husband of Elizabeth Small Pittman (1851 - 1903). Nelson passed away in 1908, and was buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana, in Section 14.[1]
