Biography

Research Notes

Martha has previously been shown as daughter of William de Plumpton and Christiana de Mowbray. The only basis for this Burke's Commoners (see general sources) which, in the Palmes of Naburn section, says that Brian Palmes married a daughter (first name not given) of William Plumpton. Douglas Richardson[1] records only two children, Robert and Alice, for William de Plumpton and Christiana de Mowbray, and no other source has yet been found for Martha being a child of theirs. Burke's Commoners does not give evidence of her first name. In the absence of any reliable evidence, Martha's previously-shown parents have been detached.

I have removed William de Plumpton and Christiana de Mowbray as parents of Martha, after asking a question in G2G. There is no strong evidence for the relationship. I have added a research note, so, if evidence does emerge later, it will it will be easy to add them back as parents. The one general source given for this does not, incidentally, give her first name.

I have asked a question in G2G about whether there is enough evidence to justify retaining her, and the currently shown sister Margaret, as daughters of William de Plumpton and Christiana de Mowbray.
